• Western literature: Swift, Yeats, Cary, Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Romantic poets;

• Eastern literature: Soseki, problems in poetry translation, Shih Ching, Ch'u-tz'u, T'ao Yuan-ming, Chin P'ing Mei, Yuan drama, Liu Hsieh, Ye Hsieh.

• Concepts in comparative poetics such as t'ung-pein (tradition and change), feng-ku (vitality and structure), hsu-ching (nullity and tranquility), sheng-ssu (imagination), ch'eng (sincerity), and ch'i (novelty);

• and some compilations of English dictionaries and an annotated bibliography of Comparative Literature co-edited with John J. Deeney.
